I have recently had an in-depth conversation with a person who has been designated as the director of security for a large church. While it is almost unbelievable that such a position should be needed, it has become a very harsh reality. Security in churches is not a brand new idea and many large churches have had security staff for years. What is new is that it is no longer an exception but becoming the norm.
Regardless whether you support this idea or not it is representative of an ever developing problem. Unstable individuals who decide to execute a mass shooting will more than likely choose a soft target. Soft targets are plentiful in a society that still demonizes gun ownership and concealed carry. Areas where guns are rare or at worst completely outlawed are the primary targets of these predators. This includes churches, schools and malls.
With that being said, I am a supporter of churches designing security plans and if they feel it is necessary, to establish a security team. However, this must be done with great care and only after due diligence. I have many clients and friends in law enforcement that have concerns about this developing trend. I can understand their concerns to a degree. They fear the establishment of ill trained and poorly organized security teams that could pose as much a danger to themselves and police as they would a criminal.
My ultimate suggestion to any church seeking to establish a security team is to follow these guidelines
- Seek professional training and firearm certification courses
- Design a complete security protocol program that outlines all aspects of your plans
- Make time to meet with your local law enforcement agency and share your protocols
- Make time to practice emergency drills at your location
- Require ongoing training for any member of your security staff
- Vet your security staff very thoroughly to avoid any issues in the event an incident ever occurs
The professional and ongoing training portion of these suggestions is by far the most important. Most people who enter a serious security position rarely understand how difficult it is to perform under stress. This is not simply an attempt to gain clients. You are encouraged to train at any professional school. One of the best places to gain this training is at Bear Creek Tactical in Stockton, Missouri. Rick Allenbrand is simply one of the finest instructors in the field.
In the end, solid training and establishment of a good working relationship with local law enforcement will set the essential cornerstone for an effective team.
I wish you all the very best this upcoming year. It is my hope that we all cross paths and enjoy the opportunity to train together!
