I have had the pleasure of visiting with many great instructors over the years and have found that ultimately at the highest level of training - it all comes down to philosophy. After a person masters the fundamentals and mechanics of shooting or combatives, the next level of training is the mind.
I have spoken often about the warrior mind and how important it is. Yet, I still feel compelled to add more to those thoughts. While many will only aspire to gain technical knowledge, a true warrior seeks to be enlightened in all things. This may sound ethereal but I tell you from experience that preparing your mind and spirit is as important if not more so than preparing your body.
Many people will claim to follow the path of the warrior yet act in ways contrary to that claim. The path we follow is narrow and challenging. You are either on the path or you are not. I will take a moment to reference the greatest statement ever made on this topic (as over used as it may be). "Do or do not...there is no try". Certainly you will stumble at times, but the challenge is to rise and get back on the path.
The greatest challenge we face is in blending our philosophies with our daily life and training. I would like to offer just a few points that have helped me through the years.
- Be compassionate yet firm in who you are.
- Always choose the high ground in all things.
- Be aware of your surroundings and those near you.
- Avoid acting recklessly.
- Do not seek conflict as conflict will find you in time anyway.
- Determine your "line in the sand" and honor it. Be gracious to those that respect it and rain your wrath on those that do not.
Until we train together again - my best to you all!
